The New Zealanders and their allies who fought at Cassino also softened up the defence for the next attack later that year in May, but New Zealand and her allies lost much as well. The consequences attributed to New Zealand#x27;s involvement in Italy and the Second Battle of Monte Cassino truly illustrates the power of war as a catalyst for social change. Retrospectively, we perceive a multitude of consequences for our nation that emanated from Cassino. The more dominant of these include the affects of Lieutenant-General.

Description These photos were taken in Italy in approx.1945. It shows Leo Beban, my Uncle, foreground, drinking beer sent from Greymouth, NZ, by Artie Beban, my Grandfather. Leo fought in the great battle of Monte Casino south of Rome where the NZ Battalion tried to take the Railway Station after the Americans had failed. The 3rd battalion, Luftlande Sturmregiment, started their drop landing directly on top of two New Zealand battalions. The 2nd battalion landed east of Spilia and the 4th battalion west of Travonitis. Once Generalmajor Meindl had secured his HQ, and dug in on the outskirts of the airfield, he sent two companies to take Hill 107, a key position.
